USAGE:
(1.) Afraid относится к прилагательным, которые употребляются только предикативно. К таким прилагательным относятся также прилагательные alike, alive, alone, ashamed, asleep, awake, glad, ill. Русское атрибутивное сочетание "испуганный ребенок (взгляд)" соответствует английскому прилагательному frightened: a frightened child (look). (2.) Afraid может употребляться в конструкции с инфинитивом to be afraid to do smth и с герундием to be afraid of doing smth Последняя конструкция обычно обозначает какое-либо нежелательное или неожиданное событие, независимое от говорящего: I am afraid of falling (crashing, making mistakes) и подразумевает не хочу, чтобы это произошло. (3.) Сочетание I'm afraid часто употребляется для вежливого отказа, сообщения неприятных новостей: I'm afraid I can't help you сожалею, но не могу вам помочь. (4.) Сочетания I'm afraid not и I'm afraid so часто употребляются в коротких ответах, чтобы избежать повторения придаточного с that: Can I take your paper? - I'm afraid not. Можно мне взять вашу газету? - Сожалею, но нельзя. /Боюсь, что нет. He is leaving very soon, isn't he? - I'm afraid so. Он ведь скоро уезжает? - К сожалению, да. (5.) See very, adv (6.)
